FAQ's
When do we meet? -All eligible Mondays, Thursdays/Fridays from 10am - 3pm Where do we meet? -While weather permits we love to meet in different locations around Wasatch county and Provo canyon. Our Monday classes meet in Southern Utah County. There are beautiful places to explore and play! When the snow hits, and some of our higher elevation locations are closed, we often meet up Provo canyon area. What is the class ratio? -We keep a 1:6 ratio of teachers/students. Our class capacity is 12 students, although we may invite a few more if they are parent accompanied. Do we follow an academic curriculum? We do have a lesson schedule and provide 30 minute lessons about nature, outdoors, animal and plants, survival skills etc. however, overall, We take a child led learning/peer mentoring approach and know that the children will learn different things every day. Being in nature for an extended period of time, having room and permission and autonomy, gives them an opportunity to trust themselves, try new things and stretch their imagination in ways they don't normally have a chance to do. In this way we get to see their confidence grow, and see them build amazing mental and physical resilience. We allow lessons to vary day to day with no set agenda. In this way we welcome their curiosity and questions that lead to our lessons and learning. How does using the bathroom in the forest work? We have a private, portable, pop up changing tent with a portable toilet. We will teach the children how to properly use this toilet in a safe, private, and environmentally safe way. Do you do free trial days? Yes, we are happy to help you schedule those and your child may attend as long as we are not at capacity of 12 kids already for that day. Please message us for more info. Is there a sibling discount? Yes, the first child will be full price, and every sibling will receive $20 off per month. Do I need to pay for my baby to come with me on parent accompanied forest days?  -No, as long as you are still able to provide supervision for your other children that are part of Forest days, then you are welcome to bring their baby sibling at no cost. What types of activities can be expected? The types of activities we do each week vary from week to week based on what the kids are excited about, and what opportunities the location provides us with. Here are some examples. They almost always love fort building no matter where we go that have trees. We let them experiment and help them create different types of forts. Sometimes using paracord and tarps and sheets, but sometimes using only what they see. ie: sticks, logs, rocks, building into hills or digging. When we are near water, they love "potion making" or pretend cooking and creating stores to sell each other things. With parent permission and supervision we do a bit of whittling like wooden spoon and bowl making. We do a lot of bush craft and survival skills. Water purification, and in the winter months we do a lot with teaching the kids about fire. Different ways to start and feed and build fires and fire safety. Then there are imaginary games, story time, and child led discovery. We lean heavily on letting the kids show us what they love or think is cool and capitalize on learning about that. Discovery and curiosity really drive learning here. When is payment due? You are welcome to Pay for a semester at a time, or month by month. Whatever would be easier for you. To secure your spot, payment for the months after we begin will be due 15 days before the next month. If you are going to be working with a homeschool funding group like Open Ed or UFA/Odyssey they have been really easy to work with. We take check, cash or Venmo or Odyssey marketplace More questions!
